London has always been a city of crossings: people arrive with different histories, accents, references and ideas, and the music tends to absorb all of it. It was here, in that constant state of movement, that Hate Moss took shape. Tina, from Italy, and Ian, from Brazil, began working together in 2017, initially through Stock-a Records, an independent label they founded as a space for their own work and for the artists around them. Over time, the label developed into Stock-a Production, an artistic collective whose activity would extend beyond releases into production, live performance, collaboration and the creation of an international network.

In 2018, their collaboration became a musical project in its own right. Hate Moss emerged with “Honey”, their first single, and almost immediately the relationship between recorded music and live performance became central to the project. The duo began touring across Brazil, Italy and the UK, building a body of work through movement and experience before releasing their debut album, LIVE TWOTHOUSANDHATEIN, in May 2019. Spain, Portugal and Turkey followed, extending the project’s reach across a European circuit increasingly receptive to its hybrid approach.

Later that year came an invitation from the Biennale to perform during the opening of Heat at the Church of Misericordia in Venice. It was a significant setting for a project whose music has always occupied an open space between disciplines, drawing on the physicality of performance as much as on the possibilities of the recording studio.

    Then the world stopped.

During the first lockdown in London, Tina and Ian continued to work together and produced Fog. Created during a period defined by isolation, uncertainty and a sudden absence of the touring life that had become so important to them, the release marked another stage in the duo’s development. With the usual movement temporarily suspended, the studio became the place where that movement could continue in another form.

By May 2022, Hate Moss were ready to enter their next phase. Their second album, NaN, was released by Stock-a Production in collaboration with Brazilian label Before Sunrise Records, opening the door to an extraordinary period of touring. Across 2023, the duo played more than 150 concerts throughout Europe, the UK and Turkey, carrying NaN into clubs, venues and festivals and gradually expanding the audience around their live performances.

The following year took them across the Atlantic. In 2024, Hate Moss toured South America, travelling through Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina and Chile and appearing at a number of festivals. At the same time, NaN itself began to evolve beyond the form in which it had originally been released. Tina and Ian invited friends and musicians from their wider scene to remix or reinterpret selected tracks, turning the album into an open-ended collaborative project. The resulting versions were released digitally, one track at a time, throughout 2024.

The idea of music as something that can keep changing runs through the history of Hate Moss. A song can exist as a studio recording, become something more physical on stage, be reshaped by another musician and return in a completely different form. Their work has increasingly developed around that sense of permeability, with electronics, voice, rhythm, noise and performance continually shifting their relationship to one another.

In June 2025, Mercimek Days brought that live dimension into focus. Released through Trovarobato and recorded live at Karga in Istanbul, the EP features the previously unreleased “Aiknow” alongside live versions of “Remake the Time (Part 1 and Part 2)” and “Birdaha”. Rather than functioning simply as another chapter of recorded material, the release documents the physical energy that had become such a defining part of the duo’s identity after years spent on the road.

Istanbul occupies an important place in that journey. So does the broader geography of Hate Moss, whose music has increasingly been shaped by the places in which it has been performed and the communities encountered along the way. Italy and Brazil remain fundamental points of reference, but London is where those histories meet, and the project has continued to extend that meeting across Europe, the Mediterranean and South America.

From late August to late September 2025, Hate Moss returned to South America for another tour. In January 2026, they released their third LP, A Hot Mess, through Trovarobato, bringing together another stage of a musical language that has spent almost a decade developing through movement, experimentation and live performance.

The title A Hot Mess feels particularly fitting for a project whose music thrives on collisions. The duo’s sound carries traces of Italian and Brazilian singer-songwriters from the 1960s and 70s, particularly in the way personal experience and social observation can exist within the same song. Around that foundation sit the psychedelic impulses of rave and trip-hop, abrasive industrial textures and the restless energy of electronic music. There is also a connection to the contemporary Mediterranean alternative scene, where traditional musical references have increasingly been pulled apart, reworked and placed into dialogue with electronic and experimental forms.

These influences rarely arrive in isolation. They overlap, interfere with one another and create new shapes. A melodic gesture can carry the memory of a songwriter before being swallowed by a heavier electronic pulse; a rhythm can suggest the dancefloor while the surrounding textures move towards something darker and more industrial. The music retains a sense of song while allowing sound, atmosphere and physical rhythm to take an equally important role.

That tension is particularly apparent in the live setting. Hate Moss have spent much of their existence travelling between clubs and festivals, and the stage has become a place where the distinctions between genres become increasingly fluid. The music can become heavier, stranger or more immediate in performance, with the duo using the energy of the room as part of the process.

During the first part of 2026, A Hot Mess was taken across Europe and the UK, with performances in clubs and festivals extending into Eastern regions including Georgia, Armenia, Turkey and Greece. The growing attention around the new record led to further invitations beyond Europe, with Hate Moss scheduled to perform at festivals in South Korea and Japan during September and October. From there, the project will continue its journey with another tour across South America.

The international scale of that itinerary reflects something fundamental about Hate Moss. Since the creation of Stock-a Records in 2017, Tina and Ian have built their project around exchange: between Italy and Brazil, between London and the places they visit, between the studio and the stage, and between their own music and the artists they invite into it. Their catalogue has grown alongside a network of musicians, producers, labels, venues and audiences that stretches across several continents.

It is this constant movement that gives Hate Moss its particular character. Their music carries the history of Italian and Brazilian songwriting into the contemporary electronic landscape, allowing the intimacy of the singer-songwriter tradition to meet the collective energy of rave and club culture. Trip-hop, industrial music and experimental electronics add further layers, while the Mediterranean alternative underground provides another point of reference for their restless approach to tradition and reinvention.

There is something appropriately London about the way all these elements coexist. The city provided the original meeting point, but the project has since become too geographically expansive to belong to any single place. Its identity has been shaped as much by Istanbul, São Paulo, Venice, Lisbon, Buenos Aires or Tbilisi as it has by London, with each journey adding another perspective to the music.

Almost ten years after Tina and Ian first began working together, Hate Moss have turned that movement into an artistic principle. A Hot Mess arrives as the latest expression of it: a record shaped by years of touring, collaboration and experimentation, and by a musical imagination that continues to move between cultures, scenes and generations. Their work lives in that restless space between the familiar and the unexpected, where a song can become a performance, a performance can become a recording, and a recording can begin another journey.

On 7 October, you can catch Hate Moss live at the MiL Festival, on the Sotão stage.

At MIL Lisboa, some gigs pass through the programme like brief sparks, and others leave scorch marks. YARD’s set belonged, unequivocally, to the latter. It was easily one of the festival’s standout performances, and one of the shows I’d walked in most eager to witness. The Dublin trio took the stage like they were firing up an airborne machine on the verge of lift-off, a propulsive force driven by serrated beats, guitars in open combustion, and an electric tension that shook the entire room.

Their shared history helps explain that rare level of intensity. Emmet White, Dan Malone and George Ryan grew up together, sharing the same streets, the same first bands, and the same instinct to shape sound until it becomes something physical. That common origin arrives onstage with the weight of a silent pact: every beat, every icy arpeggio, every distorted breath feels powered by a single, near-telepathic impulse. It’s more than chemistry; it’s a private language forged through years of rehearsals, sonic obsessions and a collective hunger to push at the edges.

Each piece behaves like a tectonic plate, shifting slowly before tearing the ground open. No frills, no hesitation, just a focus you can feel thumping in your chest.

Emmet’s vocals slice through the electronics with surgical precision. Malone’s guitar stretches out like a blade of light. Behind drums and synths, Ryan lays down the gravitational law of the room. The crowd answers with absolute conviction.

What begins as a watchful audience morphs into a collective organism the moment the beats take command. This is the kind of performance that privileges pulse over patter, that would trade a thousand metaphors for one perfectly placed physical jolt. And those jolts come again and again.

A few days before the show, during a laid-back mini-interview, YARD spoke with real enthusiasm about Máquina, one of Portugal’s most singular bands, which surprised me not for the admiration itself but for how happily they name-checked them.

For me, this was one of the festival’s defining moments, a performance that stamps itself onto memory, redraws the bar, and forges a true fusion between band and audience. If there are new acts pushing the limits of European electronics, noise and post-punk, YARD are unmistakably among them. That night, MIL Lisboa witnessed an experience that will be hard to forget.

There’s a crackle in the air, the electric hum a festival gains when it’s peaking, and something else too, that instinctive prickle that tells you you’re about to witness something no one’s remotely prepared for. At ten sharp, on the Unicorn Stage, three silhouettes slip out of the shadows: Gustav Danielsbacka, Vidar Nilsson and Nils Lindgren. Hailing from Gothenburg’s Nordic underground, The Family Men walk on with a presence sharp enough to cut straight through the crowd’s chatter.

The first sound isn’t a chord, it’s a detonation. No count-in, no easing you in. Just a sheer wall of noise slamming into the room like a seismic wave. Guitars crackle, synths erupt in metallic spasms, the drums throb like an engine on the brink of destruction. It’s sound in its rawest state, so physical it seems to bend the air around it. Their music runs on urgency and instinct: industrial rock with shattered bones, glitching electronics, dissonance as emotion, chaos as craft.

The set leans on their 2024 debut No Sound Forever from Harmful Records, but live, nothing survives intact. Songs are torn apart and rebuilt on the spot. What felt dense and textured on record becomes stripped, direct, almost violent. “Soft Collapse” morphs into an electric mantra, “Machine’s Breath” kicks off in an abrasive loop, and the title track closes the set in an emotional implosion, brutal and beautiful in equal measure.

They play like they’re testing the limits of what sound can physically withstand. And yet, inside the maelstrom, there’s control. Beneath the distortion and the feedback lurks a kind of surgical precision, an invisible choreography that turns noise into architecture.

Gustav, the main vocalist, is the epicentre. When he inevitably hurls himself into the crowd, the gig stops being a show and becomes something closer to ritual. Mic in hand, eyes blazing, he wades into the mass of bodies and cables, screaming lines like he’s exorcising something ancient and feral.

Behind him, washed-out VHS projections jitter against the walls, grainy faces and flickering lights like damaged memories caught in a loop. It’s a visual collage perfectly matched to the music, a universe of glitch and broken beauty, forever on the verge of collapse but never quite tipping over.

At one point, the sound grows so dense the floor physically trembles. The crowd doesn’t dance, they freeze, eyes wide, breath held, bodies absorbing every frequency. That’s what sets The Family Men apart: they’re not here to entertain, they’re here to infiltrate. Their music hits both body and mind with brute force and strange delicacy, beauty blooming out of breakdown.

Live, the Gothenburg trio evoke the spirit of bands who pushed rock to breaking point like Swans, Sonic Youth and Einstürzende Neubauten, but they carve out their own vocabulary: broken synths, defective rhythms, loops that feel like worn-out tape. There’s tension between machine and flesh, order and disorder, noise and the threat of silence. And that tension is their power. They’re not seeking harmony, they’re seeking release. It’s the sound of collapse sculpted into art, and we loved it.

When the last note dies and the feedback evaporates, there’s no instant roar of applause, just a brief, almost sacred silence as everyone tries to process what just hit them. Only the people who truly know this band’s sound were here, and it showed in the way they reacted.

Straight out of a Swedish underground where rock bleeds into noise, The Family Men proved at MIL Festival that their devastating live show reputation is no exaggeration. What they brought to Lisbon was more than a gig, it was a show of force and fragility, of fury and control. One of the standout performances of the entire festival, and we’d been hyped for a lot of bands.

A blistering, full-throttle set that firmly marks a band on the rise.

On the second night of MIL, Gros Coeur delivered one of the festival’s most electrifying shows, reinforcing the sense that the new francophone wave continues to produce some of Europe’s freshest and most irresistible ideas. On the Praça Stage, an intimate space blending industrial grit with homely charm, framed by wine bottles, oregano bundles and hanging garlic, the band presented a performance loaded with energy, intent and personality.

From the first track, it became clear that Gros Coeur on stage are not just about songs; they’re about presence, rhythm, collective momentum and a contagious spark that spreads quickly through a room. Their sound fuses garage rock’s raw punch, punk’s bright impulsiveness and a psychedelic shimmer that stretches each track into something more textured and colourful. Live, these influences don’t fight each other. They intertwine and expand, forming a sonic identity entirely their own.

The show opened with a surge of joyful urgency: warm, ripping guitars, a steady bassline, pulsing drums and a swirl of vocals carrying that deliciously controlled chaos that only works when a band is deeply aligned. It had the spirit of those scrappy-iconic gigs that become legend long after the fact, the kind that give you that instinctive “this is going to be special” feeling before a song even ends.

Throughout the set, the band kept an impeccable pace. Every track felt like a climb rather than a loop. The arrangements were sharp but breathable, leaving room for tension, release and risk. The more expansive moments were perfectly measured, and the rhythmic core seemed to move in real time with the crowd’s reaction.

If one figure truly reshaped the room’s energy, it was the guitarist. His presence was infectious, not through excess but through the natural ease with which he shifted between roles. A nimble multi-instrumentalist, occasional vocalist and fully committed performer, he lit up the stage with a steady, charismatic spark that stayed in constant conversation with the audience and the rest of the band.

Some musicians play. Others project. He manages to do both with a rare fluidity. Every gesture, every instrument change, every quick movement added something to the show’s narrative, helping to build a warm and unified atmosphere buzzing with life.

A band with solid identity, felt in eyes, ears, body and soul. Their interaction feels spontaneous but always musically grounded. There is room for improvisation, but never for drift. It’s the kind of chemistry that only emerges when each member understands the others’ roles intimately.

The audience’s response was immediate and only grew stronger. As the set progressed, the closeness between band and crowd turned into a driving force. There were no dips or breaks, just a continuous ascent, each track pushing the next into an even brighter space. Dance, dance, dance.

Gros Coeur’s performance was a vibrant display of creativity, cohesion and on-stage talent. A confident, inspired set that transformed a relatively short slot into a memorable experience and left a clear impression: this is a band in full artistic ascent.

One of the festival’s strongest and most assertive moments, and proof that Gros Coeur’s fire deserves ever bigger stages.

A tremer, a gritar, a respirar.
