The Shantics em entrevista

By VoxPop - março 28, 2017

When you start The Shantics?

Two of us are brothers and we have been writing together for the last 3 years or so. We had tried being in a few bands, but it’s only been the last 6months where The Shantics has really come into its own.

Why the name Shantics?

‘Shan’ is a male name that means prestige and honour, but in Scotland it means ‘unfair’ or ‘terrible’. We like that our name gives us the scope to do something with both ‘prestige’ and ‘honour’ as well as something ‘terrible’ - kind of all encompassing.
We also really liked the sound of the word ‘frantic’ – so that’s where that bit came from.

Introduce the band.

The band is two brothers, Jimmy, (singer/guitar), and Harry Morris, (guitar). Jacob Nation (bass/BVs) and Mike Cosburn (drums).

How you meet each other?

We met each other through what can only be described as fate. We were up in London going to see a gig at KOKO that our mate had invited us to, and he had brought along one of his friends that we had never met before. Although the friend that invited us lives hours away, it turns out his mate only lives walking distance from us. We had so much in common, especially music, and started hanging out loads. Two weeks later he lost his job the same day we parted ways with our previous bassist – it was fate.

When us three had found each other we then started looking for a drummer – it took us a while, but then we saw an online ad of a drummer who wanted to join a band, and Harry actually recognized his name. It turned out they already had each other on Facebook from a couple of years ago when a mutual friend had introduced them, but at the time he had been too busy…a couple years later his circumstances had changed and we were the perfect fit for each other.

Whats your influences? (music, literature, cinematography...)

Our influences come from everywhere and anywhere when we are writing. We’ve had inspiration for lyrics from a children’s action film before, sometimes TV series like Californication, or sometimes thrillers like Misery. We are constantly writing down things we hear or thoughts we have – we have over 200 pages of lyrics just patiently waiting to be used.

We love most of the greats, like Velvet Underground, The Beatles, The Cure, The Police, The Clash, Talking Heads, Oasis, Pixies… but we also let ourselves be influenced from anything we happen to hear, whether its in the same genre or not.

What you think that defines your band?

Story-telling lyrics laced with humor, and catchy energetic tunes. When we are playing live we always want to get people feeling good and having a dance and that is where we have most fun and feel most comfortable.

Who writes the lyrics and how is the process of composition?

The lyrics are pretty much always written by Jimmy, and most of the songs are sketched out initially by Jimmy and Harry, and then they are given a pulse and brought kicking and screaming into life with Jacob and Mike. But a lot of the new ideas we have are things we have hashed out in the rehearsal room.

Do you have a date in mind to have an EP or LP?

It will be VERY soon – there will be a banging song out there within the next couple of months!
